What is a roof system?

First of all, when re-roofing Avalanche Roofing & Exteriors always recommends installing a complete roofing system. Put simply, a roof system is just the components that when installed together make up a quality roof. Many systems, such as the Lifetime Roofing System by GAF come backed by lifetime warranties protecting the homeowner’s investment for years to come.

Anatomy of a Roof System

Generally, the roof system is made up of three parts:

  1. Decking
  2. Underlayment
  3. Covering

These three parts are then broken into smaller components. Refer to the image below as we go over some of these key elements of your roof.

Decking

The decking is the actual wood covering of your roof. This is usually made up of OSB or plywood. The sheets of decking should be spaced no more than 1/4″ apart.
